The Story Behind NordCycle
From our humble beginnings to becoming a leader in sustainable recycling solutions, our journey has been defined by innovation, persistence, and environmental commitment.
Our Beginning
Our Beginning: NordCycle technology is based on a technology development journey starting by our CTO in the UK in 2008, laying the foundation for our future in sustainable innovation. By 2009, they secured venture capital funding, enabling to accelerate development of the technology and take first steps toward industrial-scale impact
First Facility
In 2011, the first-generation plant was built and production officially launched. After two years of successful operation, the facility was acquired by a U.S.-based recycling company—demonstrating both the commercial viability and scalability of the technology.
Breakthrough Technology
The second-generation recycling technology marked a significant advancement. A patent application was filed in 2015 and successfully granted in November 2018, securing the core innovation. From 2016 to 2017, proof of concept was completed with funding from **Innovate UK**, validating the new process at laboratory scale.
Pilot Plant
To prepare for industrial rollout, a pilot plant was constructed and tested during 2018-2019, backed by the EU's H2020 SME grant program — demonstrating the commercial viability of this next-generation solution.
First Industrial Plant
The commercialization of the second-generation technology began through Yes Recycling (Fife) Ltd, a state-of-the-art plastics recycling facility based in Glenrothes, Scotland. The project was financed with approximately £10 million, combining debt, equity, and government grants. Ownership was structured with WM Morrisons holding a 56% stake, while the remaining 44% was held by the two original founders—demonstrating strong backing and confidence in the technology's market potential.
NordCycle Today - Industrial Scale with a Global Vision
NordCycle was founded with a clear purpose: to close the loop on plastic waste by turning it into a valuable raw material—efficiently, sustainably, and at scale. The company emerged from a belief that plastic is not a problem, but a resource—if handled with the right technology and infrastructure. Today, NordCycle has the blue prints ready for a full-scale commercialization plant at Holtskogen, and is now seeking strategic investors for the next stage in our history to build a 20.000 ton industrial facility and with plans to expand into new regions rapidly.
